Avery Gordon Enget was born on March 28, 1920 to Marian and Nels Enget in Powers Lake, North Dakota. He began school in 1926 at the Andrew Holmen country school and continued there until he completed 8th grade. Avery then took one year off to help on the family farm. He returned to school again in 1935 to graduate four years later (1939) from Powers Lake High School. In 1940, Avery went to California with intentions to work for Boeing. He came back to North Dakota in 1941 and was called into the draft, but did not have to go. In 1942, Avery began to operate a Standard Oil station in Powers Lake.
On August 2, 1946 he married Twila Emma Marie Carlson at the Niobe Baptist Church, Niobe, North Dakota. She was born on December 7, 1923 to Mabel and Otto M. Carlson. Twila was born at home in Kandiyohi Township, Burke County, North Dakota. She began school in 1928 at the Kandiyohi country school and proceeded through the 8th grade. Twila then attended Kenmare High School and graduated in 1941. She attended one quarter of college at Minot State University, where she earned a Teacher’s Certificate. Twila then returned home only to teach in the Kandiyohi country school from 1944-1946.
Avery continued operating the gas station while Twila stayed at home and they began their family.

After operating the gas station for three years with hard winters, no business, and no money, Avery went to work at Sellie’s Garage as a mechanic.
In 1951, they moved to Kenmare where Avery also worked as a mechanic at Moen’s Ford Garage. In 1958, he became the partsman. In 1961, he went to Petersen’s Ford as a partsman. In 1960-1962, Twila worked as a nurse’s aide at Kenmare Deaconess Hospital. In 1962, she started work as a sales clerk at J.C. Penny.
In 1967, they moved to Minot where Avery worked as a partsman for Westlie Motor Company until he retired in 1985. Twila worked full-time at Penney’s until 1977 when she cut back to part-time until she retired in 1983. They continued to live in Minot until 1989, when the moved back home to Powers Lake where they currently reside.
